Like all pilots, when I’m not in the air, I’m thinking about being in the air, and I’m looking for ways to be a better pilot. One of the best things to come out of YouTube (apart from funny videos of cats, dooting skeletons, skateboarding fails, Leeroy Jenkins, and serious documentaries) is the rise of pilots and other members of the aviation community sharing knowledge, experience and the lessons that have sometimes had to be learned at great cost. The Air Safety Institute have an excellent channel packed full of great lessons and, my personal favourite, the examination of where pilots and air traffic controllers have made errors of judgement.
There’s a reason why air travel is the safest form of travel today: because it’s an industry with immense focus on learning from past mistakes and of sharing those lessons with everyone. So if aviation is your thing, go take a look at those videos and ask yourself: Have I ever been guilty of one of those mistakes, and if so… how can I learn to be a better pilot in future.
